Ants are an unpredictable pest, as they can show up during any season. Carpenter ants may make an appearance in the fall, spring or any construction season. They also may appear in the late winter if they have already established themselves somewhere on your property. Pharaoh ants may come out in warmer weather when looking for sweet treats and beverages, and can ruin a barbecue quickly. Regardless of what type of ant is marching around your home, it can quickly lead from a minor problem to a major issue. However, using pesticides in the home can be dangerous. Consider these natural solutions to repel ants instead.
This household item can be used to remedy plenty of situations, and repelling ants is one of them, Bright Hub noted. If you've noticed ants crawling in your kitchen or somewhere near your home, try out baking soda. Sprinkle the substance in areas that you believe ants are hanging out. They will be afraid to cross the line, which will keep them out of your house. As an added bonus, baking soda is a natural deodorizer, and will help keep your house clean.
Lemon juice is another household item that can efficiently deter pests, Mother Nature Network advised. Squeeze a few lemons in the places that ants may be hiding or marching, such as a hole in the wall or crack in the door. Regardless of the entry point, this citrus juice will cause ants to move in the other direction and will give your home a fresh, clean scent.
Chalk is very similar to baking soda as ants will not cross the line. So, if you really want to frustrate them, draw a line of chalk in spots that you've noticed ants. Or, if you notice a colony, circle it with chalk. They despise feeling chalk on their feet, so they won't move from their spot and will be trapped.
Like baking soda, vinegar is another household product that can remedy plenty of problems. Spray the solution in ant-prone spots, or in places that you believe could become vulnerable to ants, such as a crack in the floor. Though vinegar isn't the greatest scent to smell, it will take care of the problem. As ants walk, they tend to leave a trail behind them that other ants can detect. If you wipe down counters and other areas with vinegar, it'll erase those tracks completely.
Soap and boiling water
If you're staring down an ant colony, why not just wash them away? Boil a pot of water and mix some dish soap into it. The hot water will kill the ants and the soap will keep them from crawling away.
