Identify Your Pest >>

Sometimes it can feel like pests are seeking out your home and that your yard is the only one in the neighborhood dealing with unwanted animal invaders. In some instances, this could be true, because there are certain aspects of your property that encourage creatures of all types to hang around.

Your best bet is to take the time to eliminate the kind of things that attract animals to your yard and make it harder for them to settle in. Not only will this reduce pest problems around your property but it could stop any creatures from later infesting your home.

Water, food and shelter are among the three most important things all living creatures need. Make sure your property is devoid of these items to minimize the risk of unwanted pests.

Standing water

Cities and suburbs can be surprisingly difficult places for animals to find a drink of water. As Jersey Waterworks explained, gray infrastructure such as roofing, driveways and roads move rainwater and snowmelt in an unnatural way, and many towns have diverted some waterways underground to make space for development. As a result, standing water isn't so easy to find for animals. If your yard is set up in a way that precipitation can pool or you have a built-in water feature, your property could represent an important resource for all sorts of creatures.

garden with pots

At the same time, many insects and other small creatures need water to breed. For that reason, water that collects in your yard could represent a critical spot for mosquitos and other bothersome animals to raise the next generation.

Your best bet is to fill in any places on your property where water consistently collects. You may also install new drain pipes to divert rain and alleviate this problem as well.

Free food

Aside from water, animals need food, and if your property offers a free or easy meal, creatures are likely to stick around. And because many pests are so opportunistic, addressing this issue means making quite a few considerations.

First, make sure your garbage bins are fully secured. Otherwise raccoons, skunks and other creatures will quickly find themselves an easy bite to eat. Next, make sure your family isn't leaving food scraps out on the back patio or in the yard.

There are other ways your property could represent an easy place to score some food for animals. A garden, for example, will attract all sorts of hungry creatures if you don't take necessary precautions to protect your herbs and veggies. Even a bird feeder could inadvertently entice unwanted pests to visit your yard.

An easy place to hide

Food and water are necessary for animals' survival, but what will encourage them to stick around is some sort of shelter. Protection from the elements or predators is key, especially for mice, insects and other common pests. If your property offers safety, animals are more likely to get comfortable and settle in.

Yard waste is a common source of cover and nest material for many types of animals. Be sure to dispose of lawn clippings and leaves in a timely and organized manner. Likewise, piles of brush, sticks and other items can collect along fences or on the edges of your property. This too gives small animals a place to hide. Easy access to a garage, shed or attic, meanwhile, will also exacerbate this issue.

If you see signs that wild creatures are thriving on your property, it makes sense to call a pest control specialist to identify steps to take to alleviate this problem and make your property less habitable for unwanted animals.
