According to the University of Minnesota Extension, cluster flies are considered fall nuisance flies that may require pest management. These winged insects seek shelter during the winter in large numbers and can be frustrating to deal with for homeowners looking to enjoy the warmer weather that spring brings.

Cluster fly

Cluster flies make their way into homes during the cold months, and when temperatures rise, they crawl back out in hopes of returning to the outdoors, noted Penn State Entomology. These bugs may already have made their way into your home, making home pest control an important aspect to consider when returning to warm-weather activities.

Understanding cluster flies

The University of Wisconsin Extension explained that cluster flies are more prevalent in rural areas. Therefore, if you suspect a cluster fly problem but live in an urban setting, you may be victim to another species of fly. However, if you spot what you believe are cluster flies and your home is located well outside of a city, you may very well be correct.

Though cluster flies are considered more of a nuisance than a health risk, they're detrimental to everyday living. Not only are they distracting, they can also make the home less appealing for both residents and visitors.

Dealing with cluster flies

If you already have a cluster fly infestation, realize that the problem may extend beyond what you can see with the naked eye. These bugs can hide inside walls and attics, which makes it much harder to resolve the problem entirely. Any that you spot, whether alone or in groups, can be rid of using a vacuum, according to the UW Extension.

The organization suggested providing further protection for your home by sealing up cracks around the house. The UW Extension stated that caulk cracks located in the window and door areas can allow cluster flies access to your residence, which may lead to a bigger problem.

However, if you've tended to the issue several times and can't seem to eliminate it completely, it may be time to speak to pest control specialists. Abell Pest Control has professionals who are very familiar with cluster fly behavior and can pinpoint problematic areas. From there, they'll resolve the problem in its entirety and can further assess your home for entry points that may have escaped your notice.
