When you're choosing fresh produce at your local supermarket, you're probably more concerned about blemishes and discoloration on the fruit than you are about fruit flies. Even if you see a lone insect buzzing around, you're likely to view it as the market's problem, not your own.

However, if that fruit goes home with you, the pests could come with it. Eventually, they could multiply and become more difficult to remove than just an occasional swish of the fly swatter.

fruit market

The only way to truly get rid of fruit flies once they're inside your home is to find their source and eradicate them so no more will spread the bacteria and disease that they often carry with them. Getting help from a professional pest control company like Abell will provide a thorough inspection and whatever steps are necessary to rid your home of the problem.

How to prevent fruit flies before they multiply may take some work on the part of you and your family, but in the long run, it will prevent the problem from occurring in the first place.

Keep fruit contained

Instead of putting fresh fruit in the refrigerator as soon as you get home from the market, take time to wash each piece thoroughly before putting it away. You may have no telltale signs that the fruit is carrying any bugs, so washing will at least rid them from the surface where they're likely to be.

You may have no telltale signs that the fruit is carrying any bugs, so washing will at least rid them from the surface where they're likely to be.

Next, all the fruit needs to be put away. While some fruit, like bananas, ripen better outside the fridge and some tend to discolor more quickly in the cold, putting everything away prevents fruit flies from hovering in the kitchen and nesting somewhere inside.

Keep the fruits sealed inside an airtight bag or in the produce bin of the refrigerator to deter fruit flies. If you must have a basket of fruit on your counter, cover it with a cake dome.

Fruit flies are attracted to both fresh and rotten fruit, so throw away your trash promptly. Most communities have only one trash pick-up each week, so in the meantime, place organic waste in a large airtight bag before throwing it away. Clean up counters every time you cut fruit so there's no residue for flies to be attracted to.

You can use your garbage disposal, but you'll only be breaking up the fruit that way. If there's anything lodged in the sink or disposal, it can draw flies. Clean the disposal regularly to ensure that the pests won't nest in it.
