Phorid Fly

Color: Brown
Family: Phoridae
Order: Diptera

The Phorid Flies are a family of small, hump-backed flies resembling fruit flies. Phorid flies can often be identified by their escape habit of running rapidly across a surface rather than taking to the air.

Phorid Fly Identification

To the naked eye, Phorid flies resemble common fruit flies in appearance, with bodies measuring 0.5 to 5.5 mm in length. Arched thorax gives the appearance of a humped back and also lack the red eyes of the fruit fly.

Phorid Fly Habitat

Phorid flies can breed in more types of materials than any other house infesting fly. They primarily breed in and feed on moist decaying organic matter, which can include trash/refuse areas, as well as sewer drains. Phorid flies are common around homes and businesses where food is served. Because it frequents unsanitary areas (with the ability to spread disease causing bacteria onto food products), this fly is of particular concern to hospitals, healthcare facilities, and restaurants.

Phorid Fly Life Cycle

Phorid flies develop by egg, larva, pupa and adult. The female will lay about 20 eggs at a time and will lay about 40 eggs in a 12 hour period. Each adult female Phorid will lay approximately 500 eggs. The tiny eggs are deposited on or near the surface of decaying organic matter. Larvae emerge in 24 hours and feed for 8 to 16 days. The Phorid fly larvae then crawl to a drier spot to pupate. The life cycle from egg to adult can be completed in as little as 14 days under ideal conditions but may take as long as 37 days to complete their cycle.

Phorid Fly Prevention

Preventing Phorid flies requires periodic inspections of your home / business to ensure there are no leaky septic pipes or unregulated moisture levels. Sanitary habits, such as cleaning sinks and drains, promptly disposing of spoiled food, and keeping garbage cans tightly sealed, also decrease the likelihood of an infestation.

Preparation Steps for Phorid Fly Treatment

Here are the preparation steps:

1. Treatment performed by Abell Pest Control will vary depending on the type of fly. An inspection and report detailing breeding sites will be performed. Recommended sanitation must be performed prior to any treatment. Fly traps may be used, in this case any trap should be left where the technician places them - Please do not disturb. Outside a treatment around window sills and eaves may take place.

2. Screen or seal all openings to the outside.

3. It may be necessary to vacate the premises during service and not re-enter until at least 4 hours after treatment. Persons with underlying health conditions should consult their family physician where they have concerns regarding re-entry. Open windows for 20 to 30 minutes after re-entry is possible.
